Foundation (SME-EF) Gateway Academy Summer Youth Program. Any school
with PLTW's
Gateway To Technology (GTT) program or Pathway to Engineering (PTE)
program may
offer this day camp, which is designed to engage middle school students in
hands-on STEM projects and introduce them to the GTT program.

Students come together in a fun, exciting environment to sample STEM
disciplines like robotics, aeronautics, rockets, eco-design, manufacturing and
alternative energy. They use leading-edge technologies and work on their
critical-thinking, problem-solving and collaboration skills. Teachers trained in PLTW's STEM education program provide expert instruction in small group settings.

Gateway Academy uses the same software and equipment as the GTT program and is
designed to take place in the same classroom. Enrollment is typically 20-25
students per session.

Eligibility

Open to schools currently offering the GTT or PTE program.
Teachers who have completed training in GTT or any PTE course may lead a
Gateway Academy program.

Costs

The total cost to deliver a one-week Gateway Academy is approximately $2,000.
This total is based on one instructor hired for the week at a district's
rate-of-pay and $500 to $700 of consumable materials, based on the projects
chosen from the curriculum.
If funding allows we encourage hiring an additional instructor or a high
school volunteer to assist with the program.
The costs associated with Gateway Academy may be offset by student tuition,
school district funding or other available grants and funding sources.

How to Register

Complete the registration form
(http://www.pltw.org/sites/default/files/Gateway_Academy_Registration_Form.xls)
Email the completed form to gatewayacademy@pltw.org before May 1, 2012.

The College Board

Dear Colleague:

The College Board is pleased to announce that revisions to AP(R) Chemistry will launch in the 2013-14 academic year. The revisions promote a balanced instructional approach, focused not only on factual knowledge but also on the thinking and reasoning skills vital for in-depth study -- and success on the revised exam.
http://advancesinap.collegeboard.org/science/chemistry?ep_ch=PR

We are committed to supporting teachers as they implement the revised course. Please visit our website Advances in AP at http://advancesinap.collegeboard.org/ to access the following resources and more:

* AP Chemistry Curriculum Framework (.pdf/1.2MB) -- The curriculum
framework explains the design and intent of course revisions
and articulates what students must know and be able to do
to succeed on the exam.

69th Annual Four State Regional Technology Conference Nov. 10-11, 2011

As colleagues in the state department, so they can share it with the
teachers they work with in *Oklahoma*. This year's theme is:
/*"Advancing Technology Through STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering, Math), Innovation and Imagination." */We have an
excellent conference plan and the price is definitely right ($40.00
-early registration [$50.00 regular ], which includes Thursday's
Lunch, and *69 timely interest sessions [including 20+ STEM
presentations; FIRST Robotics, etc.]* ).I know its a challenge for
educators to go to conferences in these tough economic times, but I
believe your teachers and colleagues will see its worth it, even for
a day. We would really like to see more *Oklahoma *educators here
this year, as well as more *Oklahoma *presenters at next year's
conference.

I believe we have presentations that will meet the needs of a wide
spectrum of technology and technical instructors at all education
levels. All necessary FSRTC information and links are noted below. A
listing of topics also follows the summary.

We really want the FSRTC to be a clearinghouse for best practices, so
each state can gain fresh perspectives and ideas from one another.

AP Awards

AP Awards - Below my signature block is an email from College Board about
AP Awards for the Southwestern Region. Please take time to read it and
think about who you might nominate. The nomination forms are due to
College Board by October 28th so don't delay! It would be great if
Oklahoma got the recognition it deserves!

AP Audit - Please check the attached Audit Calendar and Definition of

for those courses to be included in the November publication of
the AP Course Ledger. This is something administrators do - be
sure yours does it!
• Deadline to remove teachers not teaching or courses not being
taught during the 11-12 school year. (Note says that
administrators must contact AP Course Audit Helpline to remove
authorized courses. For that number, look at the paragraph
below.)

For questions, go to http://www.collegeboard.com/html/apcourseaudit/ or
call the AP Course Audit Helpline at 877-APHELP-0. Please note that the
helpline will be shut down all day on October 18th day and on October 28th
from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. ET.

The entire AP Course Audit System will be shut down on November 1st from
9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. ET for system maintenance. So get your audit done

Professional Development

AP Professional Development will be held in August 2011 this year. The
attached flyer shows the dates and locations of PD opportunities.

Registration will be done on-line. Just click on the link provided to
register. You'll receive a confirmation email as well as a follow-up
email reminding you of the time and location.

Budget -
AP funds have been cut from $3.1 million to $2 million.

We will be able to fund these programs:
- the July portion of the APSIs (our fiscal year is from July 1 to June 30
so we have to pay the July APSIs out of 2011-12 funds.)
- professional development for the school year 11-12 (these are the 1 day
PDs that we offer around the state)
- AP Grants - 1st & 2nd time grants, Vertical Team grants and Training
grants.

At this time, there are no funds for:
- $100 incentives to school districts for 3 or better scores on May 2011
exams - Test fee assistance for low-income or multiple test takers for May 2012
exams
- APSIs for June 2012

That's the bad news, but there is a ray of hope. The Superintendent is
amassing a list of program needs based on the cuts (including those AP
items listed) and is asking for corporate and private support for those
items. So, although you might not get AP Incentives in Sept or Oct, there
might be funds from corporations in Jan or Feb. Same goes for test fee
assistance and APSIs as well.

I am getting ready for my vacation during the 1st week of August so I
won't be available by phone, but you can email, and I will either answer
it during that week or on my return.

I hope you enjoy the last few days and weeks of your well earned vacation!

AP Coordinators

I wanted to touch base with you this last day before the 2 weeks of AP
begins! I know many of you have also had to do EOI exams so next week is
just a continuation of testing.

I have two things for you today:

First, just a couple of reminders.
• Career Tech folks need to be sure to put the home school's AP code on
the answer sheet. This applies whether the student is testing only at
the Career Tech or at the Career Tech and home school. There is no
scenario (except a home schooled student) where a Career Tech will use
their own AP code.
• Home schools need to be sure students have their student pack when
they go to test at the Career Tech. Students should only use one
student pack per year so the Career Tech and home schools have to
share.
• Career Techs need to be sure to code their students as section 9 in
order to receive separate data on their students.
• OSSM sites need to be sure to code their students as section 8 in
order to receive separate data on their students. (For you Catch 22
fans, the section 8 doesn't mean anything like that!)
• If you are not sure of a home school code or where to code the
sections, give me a call. I'll be here until 4:30. My number is
below in my signature block.
• I will be in the office for the next two weeks so give me a call if
you run into trouble.

Second, remittance information.
• I normally have a Video Conference that goes over the remittance
procedure, but this year I have recorded the information in a Webinar
format. You can access the Webinar here:
http://sde.state.ok.us/Curriculum/AP/Coord.html
• It's in a white box labeled, AP Exam Remittance Procedure.
• At that site, you'll also find a copy of the powerpoint (including my
notes), a handout with the steps lined out, and a copy of the
Supplemental Roster for Option 2 students.
• It is about 30 minutes long, and you can access it whenever is
convenient for you. No more having to fit into my schedule or the
Video Conference schedule! Hopefully, we'll save lots of time and gas!
• Be patient! It takes a bit to load the Webinar. Then, I waited to be
sure the recorder was going before I spoke. Never knew 15 seconds
could seem so long!
• If you are unable to download the Webinar, look at the Remittance
Procedure handout. You might be able to just follow that without the
Webinar. If not, check with your tech person to see how you might be
able to watch it.
• I know you are SUPER busy - BUT - you might consider watching the
Webinar before you mail the exams back to be sure you are clear on
Option 1 and Option 2 fee reductions. The remittance information
comes from your testing which might already be sent back by the time
you start working on the invoice. Then, alas, it's too late. I'm
just sayin'.
• If you are a pro at this, feel free to skip the Webinar. There is
only one major change that I saw - you have to submit the invoice
electronically as well as by mail - but that's done with a click of
the mouse. Not big thing for an AP Coordinator!

Good luck to you! You are ALL very much appreciated! Students, parents,
faculty and administrators might not say it much - but you are! Let me
know if there is anything I can do to help you out!

Aerospace Education and Training Day

The Aerospace Education and Training Day group of teachers (called Aerospace Fellows) have teacher workshops during the year. We have
some openings for math, science, technology teachers at large to
participate in two NASA workshops.

The first is Friday the 25th of February at the Tulsa Air and Space
Museum, and the second is the following Monday the 28th in Oklahoma
City at the Oklahoma School for Science and Mathematics (OSSM).

Please share this opportunity with teachers you feel would benefit
from the workshops. We have openings at both and we will provide a
nice lunch at each venue.

We will of course showcase the Fellows program and encourage them to
sign up for the program. And, let them know about the classroom
grants they can apply for through the Fellows program.

Please have interested teachers contact Kim Hunt
khunt@okcareertech.org[1] with the subject line to read "NASA
Workshop" They will need to let Kim know which venue they wish to
attend.

Toyota TAPESTRY Grants for Science Teachers

Good news! The deadline to submit proposals for the Toyota TAPESTRY Grants for Science Teachers has been extended to Thursday, March 3, 2011, at 11:59 EST. Science educators with innovative project ideas that enhance science education in their school and/or school district are encouraged to apply. The program is open to middle and high school science teachers and elementary teachers who teach some science in the classroom.

Fifty large grants totaling $500,000 will be awarded this academic year. Individual science teachers or a team of up to five can submit proposals in the category of environmental science education. Subcategories from which applicants may choose include: biotic (all living factors) and abiotic (all nonliving factors such as pollution, oil, energy, human interventions, water, soil, air, temperature, etc.).

Recipients of Toyota TAPESTRY grants will be notified in April 2011. Non-recipients will be notified in June 2011. If you have questions, please contact the program director at tapestry@nsta.org.

AP Summer Institutes

The contracts for the AP Summer Institutes (APSI) have been signed
so you are good to begin registering for those! Here are the websites for
the two we have in Oklahoma:

APSI at the University of Tulsa: www.utulsa.edu/ap-tulsa
APSI at the University of Oklahoma: www.cafe.ou.edu/advancedplacement

Please be sure to read all materials closely as they will tell you what is
covered and what is not.

All registrations and cancellations are handled by the universities so
you'll need to deal directly with them. They will also know who is
teaching the class as well.

The contact information for OU and TU is on their web sites.

These two APSIs offer lodging as a part of their registration fee if
you live a set number of miles from their campuses, but you must
follow their directions in order to sign up for lodging. (See each
web site for the mileage.)

Travel is not paid by the State Department of Education (SDE).

Non-attendance without cancellation will • not • be paid by the
SDE. (Be sure to read each cancellation policy closely! The SDE
cannot cancel your registration for you!)

**** Please remember that these are free for Oklahoma public school
teachers. You must be currently employed by an Oklahoma district in order
to have your registration paid by the SDE. Students who have just
graduated but are not under contract cannot attend as an Oklahoma public
school teacher. If your contract in one district has expired, but you
have not yet signed a contract with a new district, you are not eligible
for the registration waiver. In other words, you must be under contract
with a public school at the time of the APSI for the SDE to pay your
registration fee.*****

Second, can't find an APSI on those web sites that you want to attend?
Already seen/heard those presenters?

We will, once again, offer scholarships to attend out of state APSIs. The
application will be forthcoming, but here's what you need to know:

scholarships up to $650 are available but are for registration only!

no travel is included in the scholarship!

once your scholarship is approved, it is your responsibility to
register for the APSI you want to attend

preference will be given to those applications for APSIs that are not
offered at Oklahoma APSIs

Non-attendance without cancellation will • not • be paid by the
SDE. (Be sure to read each cancellation policy closely! The SDE
cannot cancel your registration for you!)

I'll send the application once I receive it from College Board. It
will come via this listserv.

To see what is offered at out of state APSIs, go to this web site:
http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/apc/Pageflows/InstitutesAndWorkshops/InstitutesAndWorkshopsController.jpf

As always, please forward to anyone you think might be interested in
attending - teachers are not required to teach AP or Pre-AP in order to
attend an APSI.
