Please join us for the upcoming SeaPerch workshop. I am very excited about what this type of training could mean for Tulsa area teachers and in turn their students. Let's grow and keep engineers in Tulsa. If you or your colleagues wish to attend - just keep in mind that we have a cap of 40 teachers for the workshop. Please e-mail me your contact info, T-shirt size, and a paragraph telling what you teach and how you would use this training in your classroom. I am also attaching the link for SeaPerch. Thanks again, Xan Black - Tulsa Alliance for Engineering

If you're eager to begin using the new AP Biology labs or implement IB requirements, join us!
Find out how to integrate the labs for AP Biology or IB, and learn how you can follow
your budget, the seasons, or any of your students' whims of curiosity when you guide
them through experiments of their own design. You'll come away from a CLC 5-day
Summer Workshop knowing how to:
* Create an interactive, exploration-based environment in your classroom
* Teach students the value of using the peer review method to clean up project proposals
before data collection begins and review conclusions before they are published
* Use statistical analysis methods such as chi-squared, linear regression and t-testing
to determine if the data collected meets the p-value necessary to reject the null
hypothesis
* Share students' analysis and conclusions in unique ways, so that everyone learns
from each others' discoveries
* Teach your students to collaborate as a group of peer explorers who question the
world through scientific reasoning
If you would like to add these skills to your repertoire, please join me for a 5-day
Summer Workshop this year in Asheville, NC, where we will do all of these things
and more using hands-on learning and critical-thinking activities.
5-day Summer Workshops 2012
"Critical-thinking Activities for Cell Biology" June 11-15, 2012
"Critical-thinking Activities for Anat & Physio" June 18-22, 2012
"Critical-thinking Activities for Ecology" (for ES and Bio) June 25-29, 2012
"Critical-thinking Activities for Genetics" July 2-July 6, 2012
For a detailed list of the topics covered in each workshop, click on Summer Workshop
Agendas.

Another wonderful summer opportunity for teaching professionals - Engineering at OU
We are pleased to invite you to apply for the University of Oklahoma College of Engineering Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) Program: Strengthening a K12 Learning Community through Engineering Research. Our program is funded by the National Science Foundation as part of their commitment to building the workforce in science and engineering. You, as teachers, are critical in the decisions students make about their future careers. The RET is a six-week on-site summer program, starting June 11, 2012 and ending July 20, 2012. This is the fifth year of our program. Over the past years, we have had the privilege of working with 57 teachers teaching math and science courses from 40 schools across the state.
The RET provides high-school math and science teachers the opportunity to actively work with OU engineering faculty on engineering research. You will use this hands-on experience to develop authentic inquiry-based math and/or science curriculum that you will implement during the 2012-2013 academic year. The RET provides a total stipend of $4000 for participation in the year-long program. Nominal travel funds are available to those with demonstrated need.
For specific information on the RET program, including possible engineering research topics, summer workshops, and lesson plans previously developed, please visit our RET website at
http://www.ou.edu/content/coe/centers/Researchteachers/home.html.
Attached is the program flyer and application. We hope you consider participating. Please forward this announcement to other teachers who may be interested in the program. If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Chen Ling at chenling@ou.edu or 405.996.8453 (phone), 405.325.7555(fax).

Why Should I Care Who?s An Engineer? The Need for Women in Engineering (presentation on Friday))
You are invited to attend the 45 min presentation at no
charge. It is at TU, ACAC, 9 AM this Friday.
Why Should I Care Who?s An Engineer? The Need for Women in Engineering
Tulsa Engineering Summit, Friday, March 2nd, 9:00 ? 9:45 AM,
University of Tulsa, Allen Chapman Activity Center
In recent years, the technical community has looked at ways to
increase the number of individuals in engineering. In evaluating the
data of what makes up the population of current engineers, it helps
us look at where future engineers may be - the under-represented
areas today ? women, minorities, etc. In the spirit of educating
technical communities about the importance of this issue, Cathy
Pieronek will present statistics about the under-representation of
women and minorities in engineering, provide information about why we
need more in engineering, and discuss the changes needed to bring
more women and minorities into the field.
About the Speaker:
Cathy Pieronek is Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs and Director of
the Women's Engineering Program at the University of Notre Dame
College of Engineering. She earned her B.S. in aerospace engineering
and her law degree from the University of Notre Dame and her M.S. in
aerospace engineering from UCLA. She has worked as a systems engineer
on NASA projects for TRW Space & Defense Sector in Redondo Beach, CA,
and as Director of External Relations for the Notre Dame Law School.
In her current role, Cathy is responsible for the academic progress
of all of the college's undergraduates, with a special emphasis on
women. She has worked within the college and across the university to
address issues that affect the retention of women. Her efforts have
led to a variety of programmatic changes that improved the retention
of women from first year to sophomore year, bringing women's
retention on par with men's and raising the retention rates of all
students.
Cathy's research interests focus on engineering education, and
particularly on issues that affect the persistence of women in
engineering, and on Title IX and the relationship of the
gender-equity law to both academic and athletic opportunities for
women. She has published and presented peer-reviewed papers on
various aspects of her research at conferences sponsored by the
American Society for Engineering Education, Society of Women
Engineers, Women in Engineering ProActive Network, Frontiers in
Education and American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and
has appeared on television shows discussing equality for women in
academics and athletics.

FIRST Roboitcs March 29-31
Good Afternoon Volunteers!
The regional is just around the corner and the final preparations are underway. Next week will mark the close of build season and the regionals will begin.
The Oklahoma Regional is still in need of a few good women and men. From the pits to the queuing team, I can use many good hands.
So if you have not yet found your way to VIMS, I humbly ask that you give your time again and sign-up. I’m always available to work with you over the phone if the system is giving you any problems. FIRST recently moved to a new server and I know there have been some issues this past month.
